Dr. Alejandro Kovacs has a stellar new procedure for treating gum disease, and it is LANAP. This FDA-cleared procedure is a form of laser gum surgery that can effortlessly remove harmful bacteria from your mouth causing periodontal disease. If you ever experience gum disease, then make sure to ask our periodontist about it at a consultation.
What Is LANAP?
The procedure utilizes a strong laser to specifically target areas of the mouth with excessive bacterial growth. The wavelength of the laser allows it to treat diseased tissue without harming any of the nearby healthy structures. The light even penetrates several millimeters past the surface of the gum tissue to reach more bacteria. It also results in a more manageable recovery because the laser creates a stable clot through its interaction with hemoglobin.
Why Is It a Preferable Alternative?
Traditional treatments for gum disease were effective at eliminating harmful bacteria, but it came with its setbacks. The periodontist would have to cut into the gum tissue, which resulted in bleeding and a longer recovery period. No cutting or stitches are required, so patients enjoy reduced bleeding and discomfort. It is much more comfortable, which is why so many of our patients enjoy it.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Not everyone qualifies for laser gum surgery. People who have serious symptoms of gum disease typically qualify, and these symptoms include:
- Pain while brushing
- Swollen or red gum tissue
- Loose gums
- Bleeding gums
- Presence of gingival pockets
To be a good candidate, our periodontist will also ask you to make changes to your oral hygiene routine. You need to be willing to brush, floss and use mouthwash more frequently to avoid future complications.
